Today's Market Highlights
The pound rallied this morning after the UK and the EU reached a divorce deal ahead of next week’s EU Summit, which means that talks can soon turn to trade. Sterling hit 1.1500 against the euro for the first time in six months, whilst GBP/USD regained 1.3500.
Given the positive news, the pound may hold or extend these gains today. An expected slowdown in production figures (09:30 GMT) could weigh on the pound, at least temporarily.
In the afternoon, the November jobs report will be in focus (13:30 GMT). A strong NonFarm Payrolls figure and pick-up in wage growth could see the dollar strengthen. The figures should keep the Fed on track to hike rate on 13 December.
Next week is a busy one. UK economic releases include CPI, employment, and Retail Sales figures. The week also sees the latest Fed, BoE, and ECB meetings and the final EU Summit before the turn of the year.
